Spidey goes west

Hey out there internet, just wanted to take a minute and drop a line. For all our friends out west who have huddled up late nights to our youtube videos longing for a Spidey experience of your very own, your ridiculously nerdy prayers have been answered... and so have ours.

A couple of theater companies (one mid-west-ish, and one west-coast-ish) are mounting "The Spidey Project..." in their 2012 seasons. Shiny new casts, crews, sets... with none of the timing or monetary restrictions, but all the same rag-tag awesomeness of the New York hit.

The west coast production is happening at Theater Unleashed in LA (California)

and the mid-west regional production is happening at TADA Productions in Lincoln (Nebraska)

A Pirate Project

While we’re still trying to keep the finer points of the story quiet, it’s a swashbuckling pirate adventure in three musical acts. Short musical acts… but there are still three of them. For the initial reading we’ve rounded up some of the usual suspects from our last two shows (The Spidey Project and POPE!) but this will definitely require a larger cast than we’re used to.

Everything is still pretty early in development (especially for a show that is scheduled to open in October!) While the first draft of the script is done, the score is still yet to be started, and all those other important things that go into a musical still need to be thought about. But adventure calls again, so onward!

So many people have been asking for the lyrics to go along with the videos, so here they are (above). Unfortunately most of the indents got destroyed in the cut/paste, but it's still pretty readable. Also, I make no apologies for the fact that I almost never use punctuation when typing lyrics... you can sort of intuit where the punctuation goes.

Now you can read what they are singing in any moments when the sound is a little hard to hear.

Hey everyone out there in internet land!

It’s been a couple of weeks since our last update (and we hope you’ve enjoyed the videos) sorry for the huge delay but we’ve got some cool stuff in the works and I just wanted to drop a line so you didn’t think we were dead or anything. I should have the next video or two cut and uploaded in the next few days, so keep an eye out. Also, we’ve been hitting the studio pretty hard to record the cast album. Thank you so much to everyone who voted in our poll, there was enough interest to make an album worth while and NY Noise donated their gorgeous recording studio (which you may have seen us rehearsing in in the first music rehearsal video). So keep checking the site if you want to know how the album is progressing or when it is going to be released.

We came together about a month ago for a cause we all believe strongly in, and after weeks of getting no more than two hours of sleep a night, grabbing quick meals while walking between work and rehearsals, occasionally letting our loved-ones know we were still alive between conference calls and organization email chains, and a stomach virus that nearly DELAYED our production - we did it!

Hey everyone! Sorry for the delay in updates! So for those that didn’t hear: the opening/closing shows were a huge success. Reviews have been coming out from both the comic-book community and the musical theater community and it’s across the board positivity! Everyone dug what we were putting out, and we couldn’t have been more thrilled with it. There are a couple of new videos on the way from the opening night behind the scenes, but of course what most of you want is opening night in front of the scenes, so keep your eyes pealed, I think I saw some cameras in the audience!

Opening Day!

Anyone else not sleeping out there? This is it folks, in approx 15 short hours the doors open and you'll get to see exactly what we've been cookin up. I'm sorry we've been so cone-of-silenced about the details of our plot, and haven't let much of the score leak in any of the interviews or press or videos or anything. I take full responsibility for this, I'm notoriously secretive about developing shows. Not that it really requires it, but I love when people go into a theater entirely unsure of what they're getting themselves into and experience the full show spoiler free. We'll take you on an adventure, it will be hilarious, and the songs will rock. Of this we are sure.

And keep checking the blog, now that we've opened the need for secrecy is over and we can post our other clips and videos, and much more :)

A PIT Walkthrough

Hey everyone, I'm home sick :( so I figured I'd slap together some extra footage of things we've recorded so people can get a better idea of whatever.

This is some footage of Jeff Lapine, artistic director of the PIT, leading us on a walkthrough of the theater. Their space is gorgeous, and for those of you fellow theater nerds out there it used to be the Algonquin Theater.

3 Days and Counting

Hey Guys - Jon Roufaeal here. We're 3 days away from the show and things are getting intense! Rehearsals are going great, and now it's time for us to think about all those small logistical things we weren't focused on as we were putting this show together. Things like...COSTUMES!!!

We have a fantastic costumer who has volunteered her time and talent to help us out, but there is 1 integral piece that I desperately want for the show...a cool Spidey costume. I've posted on facebook already, but thought I'd try my hand here.

Does anyone have a sweet adult Spidey costume they'd be willing to donate to the production? Several people have volunteered to buy one & donate it, and I just have to thank all of you who have volunteered to do that. But Justin and I would like to avoid that as best we can, so I thought I'd try the blog to see if any of our new internet friends could help. Now, I say donate because it's likely the costume would have to be taken apart, or altered in some major way to make it condusive to quick changes. And while wearing the suit under his clothes works in the comics, we can't have our Peter Parker fainting on stage - he's got far too much singing to do!

The Spidey Project will be holding a day-of-performance lottery for the remaining FRONT ROW tickets one hour prior to the 8PM curtain (7PM). Lottery tickets will be available starting at 11am (and running until 7pm) at The Peoples Improv Theater (123 East 24th Street) box office. The drawing will start promptly at 7PM. Ok, here's a quick update from me and Jon. I apologize in advance for the shoddy editing job, we're down to the wire on time, and while I want to keep releasing these videos I just don't have enough time to edit them into something bangin'. So imagine in your minds that there are all kinds of great fades, and sweeps, and graphics, and continuity.

For any of you who haven't been following via facebook or twitter, while we've been receiving all kinds of wonderful press and publicity from the interest in our cause, we had something crazy happen last week. Writer/director/comic author/Silent Bob/all around great guy Kevin Smith mentioned the Spidey Project in his podcast "Babble On" (Episode 24, at the 58 minute mark) http://smodcast.com/babbleon/index.html

Being huge Kevin Smith fans ourselves, and seeing a small window of opportunity with him being in NY doing a signing at Midtown Comics before he hits the road to promote his new movie Red State, Jon and I decided to try our hand at waiting in line for an autograph and to personally thank him for his shout out! By the time we got there we managed to snag the very LAST two tickets they were giving out to meet him. The hours we spent waiting on the street in line were more than worth it, he took a few minutes to talk to us about what we're doing and how great he thinks it is. Goddam, what a guy! That bit at the end is him asking about the camera I've been filming the vlogs with.

March 4, 2011, New York, New York____: The Spidey Project: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility sold out its first show this evening in under one minute. Due to such high demand for this event, a second show has now been announced by brain-child Justin Moran. “You’ve been such great supporters so far,” Moran says to his fans, “and we want to get you in to see this show.” The second performance is set for March 14, 10pm at the Peoples Improv Theater (The PIT) located at 123 East 24^th Street.

Hey everyone! Here it is, the official ticket info (check back here often for updates on extra tickets, etc):

-Tickets go on sale (well… are made available) at 12:01am March 4th. So for those of you interested, you may want to take a nap Thursday evening so you can stay up and snag a pair.

-The cost: FREE! (That’s $0.00)

-Anyone making an online order is limited to 4 tickets, please, as a favor to us, ONLY get multiple tickets if you’re planning (in advance) to use them all (please don’t get extra thinking you’ll just find people to go with you… while you are charming and wonderful and will be able to find people to go with you, we’d rather give everyone a fair shot).

-To claim your tickets ALL parties must be present at the PIT 15 minutes prior to the show, any tickets unaccounted for at that time will be released to those waiting in the lobby.

-The internet is NOT the only way to get tickets! We will be saving a chunk of approx 20 tickets which will only be available to people at the door. So even if you can’t get tickets online, there will definitely be tickets available at the door. Also, any unclaimed pre-sale tickets will be available to people trying to get them at the door 15 minutes prior to the show (and there’s always at least a few people who flake on reservations) so if you can’t get tickets online and you live in the area, please don’t let that stop you from coming to see the show!

Rehearsals are in full swing

Hey everyone. It's Justin. I've got another video update. This one is a little longer. It spans a couple of rehearsals, the first music rehearsal and a blocking rehearsal. Also, as per some requests, I have a video from the creative process... as the creative process takes place at terribly awkward hours via ichat sometimes, this is a great example of just how unattractive writing a musical can be... but it's still really fun and worth it... even if I look like I might be certifiably insane.

Now that rehearsals are in full swing, between directing and trying to organize all the amazing volunteers for the technical stuff, I'm giving blog-access to some of the crew to update you as well. Some of you may be interested in other aspects of this process and with a few of us dropping updates maybe we can better satisfy your appetites.

Also also, if any of you have any questions about the development process, or what we're doing, or anything like that, feel free to comment these videos. I can't guarantee that we'll be able to answer all your questions... (because of the ticking deadline immediately to the right) but hey, maybe we can try!

Hey Everybody,

Jon Roufaeal here, co-writer on the book & lyrics for “The Spidey Project: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.” I just wanted to take a second to introduce myself and thank all of you who have been supporting this show. I have been blown away by all the people who have offered their time and talents to make this thing become a reality: from actors to musicians, writers, set-designers, lighting people, sound people, lawyers (seriously), choreographers, publicity people and all the fans of Spider-Man, musical theater or both who have been spreading the word.

As of today, we’re deep into music rehearsals - and the cast sounds great together. Adam and Doug, the two composers, have written some really fantastic songs - Peter Parker especially gets some epic moments that I can’t wait for people to hear.

I’ll be adding to this blog along with Justin - between the two of us we should be able to get updates on here pretty regularly. More to come real soon...Bye all!

Hey everyone. Now the cast is in place, I want to thank everyone who submitted resumes and sweet youtube links! There was an incredible amount of talent both vocal and comedic. I'm sorry I wasn't able to reply to everyone who submitted, there were just so many of you and my precious seconds keep ticking away, but you guys are awesome! And thanks again!

Here's a quick glimpse into the first rehearsal, and a brief introduction to the cast. This was the first time anyone besides us has read the script or heard any of the score. It was an exciting night, things are moving along.

We've got the script entirely done, the score is nearly complete too. Rehearsals start Wednesday, we're just waiting to hear back from our last few potential cast members. The board is set up, the pieces are moving.

Now that the creative development is done, on to the next chunk of hard work. As far as the videos go, we're gonna start heading out and recording in rehearsals and meetings and things, so no more of my tiny spare bedroom with a green screen.

Hey everyone, amid the many fantastic emails I've been receiving from volunteers and supporters there have been a few questions that keep popping up, so I figured it would be easier for me to answer them in one blanket post here instead of a bunch of different emails.

How can I get tickets?
Tickets will be available in the coming weeks from the PIT's website, keep an eye here and we'll let you know just when.

We can confirm that all tickets will be completely FREE! A special thanks to Jeff Lapine and the PIT for waiving all costs to everyone! Since online tickets will probably go fairly quickly, they'll also hold about 20 seats at the door so anyone who can't get tickets online can try there.

Also, the performance date (and ONLY performance date) is Monday, March 14th. Put it in your planners!

Can I play Mary Jane?
Bad news ladies (and some dude with flowing red hair) there is no Mary Jane in this musical. This story pre-dates her a bit.

Can I play Julie Taymor?
Bad news on this front too, there is no character based on her. This musical isn't about her specifically or her production, just a great musical about a hero we all know and love.

Are you comicbook fans?
I used to be a Spider-Man fanboy especially of the cartoon, until I started in on this I hadn't reread the early comics in years... though I did recently play though 'Ultimate Spider-Man' for the Gamecube. My co-author, Jon Roufaeal, is a huge comic nerd and was much more familiar with (and a stickler for) all the details than I was. The result is something we feel is a true homage to the comics, but creative and unique to what we are trying to do.

‘Spiderman Smackdown’ Project Aims to Launch Original Spiderman Musical on $0 Budget One Day Before $65 Million Broadway Production

Feb. 16 2011, New York, NY: ____ Veteran humorist and playwright, Justin Moran, launches “Spiderman Smackdown”, a guerilla theatre project to write, rehearse, and perform a fully realized musical based on the character Spiderman in under 30 days with a budget of $0. Set to open one day before the $65 Million Broadway musical “Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark”, Moran’s musical will be the first Spiderman Musical to officially open in New York City.

Moran has launched a blog (thespideyproject.blogspot.com) and YouTube page to promote the project and to enlist a troupe of volunteer writers, designers and actors. “How important is $65 Million in making good theatre?” jokes Moran. “We’re going to develop a story, write a complete musical score and script, design sets and costumes, cast, rehearse, advertise and ultimately mount the production on March 14th, 2011 at the The People’s Improv Theatre in NYC.”

Moran is collaborating with writer Jon Roufaeal on the story and book, based on the origin story from “the Amazing Spiderman” comic books, and has brought on composers Adam Podd (POPE! the Musical, ImgineOcean) and Doug Katsaros (Broadway's Hair; The Rocky Horror Show; Grammy nominated Footloose; TV's The Tick) to write and arrange the score. “The outpouring of volunteers in these first 4 days has been overwhelming,” says Moran, “and I am extremely confident in the level of talent that is going into creating this completely original Spiderman Musical.”

Justin Moran is no stranger to new thinking in creative theatre production. He is a resident writer and performer with two improv comedy groups at The Magnet Theatre in NYC, and his original musical, “POPE! The Musical” (Fringe Festival NYC 2010 Winner: Outstanding Music and Lyrics) which he wrote the book and lyrics for played off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortell Theatre in 2010. The Spidey Project will open at the People's Improv Theater (the PIT, 123 East 24th St), March 14th, 2011.

Smackdown Update

Making haste. The creative team is fully assembled, the script/libretto is well underway, and a venue is secured. I'm still hoping to find a larger venue, but I know that I'm really lucky to have been given a free venue in NYC at all, it's a 50 seat theater on 30th street. More on it soon.

Thank you to all the composers who volunteered their time! I figured it would be best to go with only two, those are Adam Podd and Doug Katsaros. More on those guys soon too.

Another thank you to all you authors who support the cause and wanted to get involved. I was only planning on working with one writing partner on this, but I'm amazed that so many out there were so interested! I released this video yesterday. An explosion of action after some pent up musical-theater rage... I am totally serious about it. The support and response it has been getting is tremendous! The amount of you who believe in the project and want to volunteer your time is inspiring. I've been in touch with some of you already, and I will be in touch with more. I'm trying to get things done as swiftly as possible (obviously with the time constraint) but if you haven't heard back from me, don't worry, it's likely I'm just not at the right step of the project yet.
